Free Sci-Fi story sent to your E-mail
by Ripley Patton (rippatton)

My story, The Derby, that appeared in Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine #33 in March of 2008, is now in the process of nomination for The Sir Julius Vogel Award.

If you are interested in a free copy of this story, please PM me with your e-mail and I'll send it to you, with simple directions on how to nominate it, if you think it is good enough.  I will not use your e-mail in any other way, and you are under no obligation to nominate The Derby, though I would appreciate a ping by PM if you do.

Hey, at the very least, you get to read a story that everyone in Australia had to pay for.

Seeking NZ Speculative Fiction Writers
by Ripley Patton (rippatton)
at September 10th, 2008 (03:22 pm)

I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer living on the South Island looking for other speculative fiction writers to network with.  I moved here from the States two years ago and have been nominated for the Sir Julius Vogel Award 2009.  Though I love living in New Zealand, I've been a little disappointed in how little is going on in the writing community - or maybe there is stuff going on and I just haven't found it.  Most of the NZ websites and associations pertaining to Speculative Fiction I've looked at haven't been touched in years.  I'm thinking of starting a LJ community for NZ genre writers but wanted to throw a net out there to see if there are even any fish in the sea.  Anyone iterested, please comment here, friend me, or leave a comment on my LJ.  North or South Island is fine but please indicate which.

I look forward to seeing who is out there.

Dollhouse Teaser
by Alsha (alsha)
at May 16th, 2008 (05:56 pm)

The first teaser for Joss Whedon's new show, Dollhouse, is up if anyone is interested. I'm really looking forward to it! Here's hoping it has better luck for Joss and Eliza than Firefly and Tru Calling. I was surprised to see Amy Acker has been cast for it too.

NZ Herald: It's high time Sky got the Sci-Fi channel
by botrytis (botrytis)
at April 21st, 2008 (04:50 pm)

From the NZ Herald website:

It's high time Sky got the Sci-Fi channel
So here's the message to Sky's programming people - next time you're looking to add a channel to your pay TV line-up maker it the Sci-Fi Channel. I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there disillusioned with TV and looking for some of the great thought-provoking material in the vein of The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits.
So if you want the Sci-Fi channel on Sky leave a comment below and show the programmers at Sky you want something more substantial to view on their pay TV service!

so, who caught tonight's new Simpsons episode? With Alan Moore and Art Spiegelman?

Featuring the DVD "Watchmen babies in: V for Vacation!"

(Yes, this isn't strictly sci-fi. But this community is the closest I've got.)

In a desperate attempt to keep this on-subject, who knows when Razor (the new BSG miniseries) is getting a DVD release here? Who's watching the new Bionic Woman?

current mood: weird

Conjunction, the National SF Convention for 2008, is on next weekend! Featuring guests of honour Elizabeth Moon, Kate Orman & Jon Blum, Philippa Ballantine, and Andrew Ivamy, plus a great range of panels and events. It should be a lot of fun - register online now, or pay at the door.

Special events include writers' workshops on Friday, a Karori Sanctuary tour with Elizabeth Moon on Saturday morning, and the Banquet on Sunday night.

There's also the Floating Market on Saturday (10am to 1pm) - buy and sell new and used SF/F merchandise of all kinds. Admission for this event only is free to anyone; sellers' tables are $2 for convention members, $20 for anyone else.
